MANUAL WHEELCHAIR MANUEVERING CHARACTERISTICS

Since the two rear wheels of a manual wheelchair are not attached to a drive mechanism and can thus turn independently of one another, the turning radius of a manual wheelchair is among the smallest of the wheelchair types.

The center point of a manual wheelchair's turning radius is at the center of an imaginary line drawn between the centers of the rear wheels. The outermost extent of the turning radius is the forward edge of the wheelchair's footrest or the wheelchair user's foot.

As shown in this bitmap drawing, the center point and the outer edge of the turning radius of a manual wheelchair determine its turning radius "footprint".
